Not that I’m complaining about this at all, but it is really surprising to me that it’s Benicio Del Toro, not Sean Penn, who has emerged as the critical darling of the Best Supporting Actor race.
I never would have predicted that a month ago.
We mention it briefly on the podcast, but if the season just decides that Penn getting a nomination he won’t win for that ultimately means nothing to his career doesn’t happen, and instead that gets del Toro in, alongside a Sandler, for example, well…that’s a win overall for everyone.
