Interview: Morgan Spector on the Subversive and Unique Delights of ‘The Gilded Age’

When you talk to Morgan Spector, everything is on the table. While we were set to discuss his work on The Gilded Age as George Russell, the natural course of things led us in all sorts of directions. Whether it’s his brief film work, including I Don’t Understand You from last year (reviewed here), or politics, he’s open to anything and everything. Moreover, he can speak knowledgeably about it all, so even before the camera was rolling, we were already comparing our beards, animals, and more. Not every Emmy season conversation becomes just a compelling back and forth, but this one sure was. While we recorded this several weeks ago, today, I’m pleased to have it come your way now, as it’s a good one.

Below, you can see my chat with Spector. We tackle The Gilded Age from what I think is a pretty interesting angle. Especially considering how political Spector is in real life, the subversive nature of the show lends itself well to this discussion. He’s funny and passionate, deeply grateful for the work, and full of stories. Some of his bits about newcomers to the show were utterly enjoyable, while being fascinating in their own right. Over the course of several seasons now, Spector has been able to explore George in a way that’s clearly very satisfying for him, and in turn, that really does rub off on the audience. If you’ve yet to give a shot to The Gilded Age, now’s the time. Let this conversation be your entry point. It’s right there on HBO Max and features some of the best acting and writing out there currently. Gibe it a chance and you’ll be glad that you did.
