Interview: Andrew Rannells Discusses ‘Miss You, Love You’ and Finally Getting to Work with Allison Janney

Andrew Rannells is probably best known either for playing Elder Kevin Price on Broadway in The Book of Mormon or for his 35 episodes as Elijah Krantz on Girls. His film resume is still filling out, with I Don’t Understand You an underrated recent outing. However, his work in Miss You, Love You, a film acquired by HBO and now up for an Emmy Award, is probably the best thing he’s done to date. Rannells is clearly proud of it, too, as he’s been out promoting the movie during its campaign. Recently, we spent some time on Zoom discussing the flick, its nomination, and how it got him to finally work with Allison Janney. Today, in the final days of Emmy voting, our chat comes your way.

Miss You, Love You centers on widow Diane Patterson (Janney) as she plans her husband’s funeral. Diane’s estranged son sends his assistant Jamie Simms (Rannells) instead of coming himself, which leads to Jamie grieving with her, as well as some revelations about all involved. Mixing comedy and drama deftly, it actually screened at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was purchased by HBO Films. Fast-forward to later on in the year and the movie is now nominated for Outstanding Movie at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Below, you can see my discussion with Rannells. We touch a bit on I Don’t Understand You (reviewed here) as well as Girls, and even The Book of Mormom (relating to my recent conversation here with co-star Josh Gad), but the focus is obviously on Miss You, Love You. Rannells is eager to talk about the film, honest about how some projects turn out better than others, and thrilled to be discussing working opposite Janney.
