Ahead of its fifth season premiere on September 14th, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale has been renewed for a sixth and final season. While the Emmy-winning series will come to an end soon, its creator and executive producer Bruce Miller is already developing a follow-up titled The Testaments. This sequel will take place years after the original show.
The Handmaid‘s Tale is based on the novel of the same name published by Margaret Atwood in 1985. Every single season of the show has been nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, including the time the first season won the award in 2017. The series also gained multiple acting nominations over the years, including Elisabeth Moss’ win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
The upcoming fifth season of the show sees June facing consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose. We also take a look at the widowed Serena attempting to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada, while Commander Lawrence works with Nick and Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power.
Bruce Miller had the following comments regarding today’s announcement: “It has been a true honor to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale. We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point.”
