Honestly, knowing ahead of time just how badly Searchlight Pictures had screwed over The Testament of Ann Lee and bracing myself for that, I’m actually… pretty okay with these nominations?

I’m thrilled that they passed on committing blatant category fraud with Paul Mescal in favor of a makeup nomination for Delroy Lindo five years after he was unforgivably snubbed for Da 5 Bloods (and as a bonus, he gave my favorite performance in Sinners!). I’m not happy that Frankenstein got a Cinematography nomination, but missing out on Best Director in favor of the far more deserving Joachim Trier sort of makes up for that. Oh, and speaking of Sentimental Value, I am absolutely delighted by the fact that literally all four of the principal cast members got acting nominations (yeah, Stellan Skarsgård is arguably category fraud, but it’s not that egregious in my eyes… plus, I’m not gonna begrudge Academy recognition for the Stellan Skarsgård!)! Also, I am so happy that the excellent The Perfect Neighbor and the astonishing The Alabama Solution both made it in Best Documentary. I was pretty sure the latter would miss out despite being such a heroic feat of guerilla activist filmmaking.

I wish The Secret Agent had gotten more nominations (it’s far and away superior to most of the Original Screenplay nominees, to take just one example), seeing Joel Edgerton left out of Best Lead Actor stings, and good freakin’ gawd I know I’m repeating myself but I just can’t get over how badly The Testament of Ann Lee was misserved by such an incompetent marketing campaign and theatrical rollout… but all in all, I don’t have that much to complain about.

Also, not to be mean, but I can’t lie and pretend I don’t think this is great news: Wicked: For Good failed to score a single nomination. Not one.

I was worried Universal Pictures was going to coerce an obligatory nod in at least a few categories, and I’m relieved to see that AMPAS collectively told them “No.”

So happy for Delroy Lindo.
Sad for Paul Mescal.
SOOOO happy for Kate Hudson.
Excited for Michael B Jordan and Ryan Coogler!!!!!

This is going to be an epic next month plus. OBAA could sweep SAG, PGA, and DGA. If Sinners wins one or two of those guilds, things will get interesting!
