Interview: Claire Foy Discusses the Emotional Power Within ‘All of Us Strangers’

Claire Foy plays, for me, maybe the toughest role I’ve ever had to digest in All of Us Strangers. After all, she’s portraying a writer’s deceased mother. I happen to be a writer with a recently deceased mother. So, Foy’s work was something that hit me hard. When the time came to sit down on Zoom with her, lo and behold, the subject came up. Yesterday, I shared my discussion with filmmaker Andrew Haigh (here). Today, it’s Foy’s turn to talk.

Back at Telluride (here), I wrote a bit about the cast:

Andrew Scott is best in show, though all four of the main characters are solid. Scott has the most screen time and has to go to the biggest places, but he does it with just the right amount of subtlety. Paul Mescal is a bit more stock of a character, but he realizes him with a ton of specificity. As for Jamie Bell and Claire Foy, they’ll just straight up break your heart. The scenes with Bell, Foy, and Scott are where this film really wrecked me.

Below, you can see my chat with Foy. Luckily, while we do talk about her role in relation to my situation, that’s not all we discuss. Plus, as she details, this wasn’t a solely dour experience, so it winds up being a pretty lovely conversation. One particular scene in All of Us Strangers is some of her finest work to date, with a line that shattered me. If you haven’t seen the film yet, once you do, you’ll know what I mean.
