Interview: Chatting About the Depths of ‘All of Us Strangers’ with Jamie Bell

The cast of All of Us Strangers, without question, have some of the toughest roles of the year. Jamie Bell has to represent so much, to so many people, while also playing a precise role, that the fact it works so well is almost mind-boggling in hindsight. Earlier in the week, I shared my discussion with filmmaker Andrew Haigh (here) about it, with yesterday bringing my chat with Claire Foy (here). Today, it’s Bell’s turn up at bat to talk All of Us Strangers.

Back at Telluride (here), I wrote a bit about the cast:

Andrew Scott is best in show, though all four of the main characters are solid. Scott has the most screen time and has to go to the biggest places, but he does it with just the right amount of subtlety. Paul Mescal is a bit more stock of a character, but he realizes him with a ton of specificity. As for Jamie Bell and Claire Foy, they’ll just straight up break your heart. The scenes with Bell, Foy, and Scott are where this film really wrecked me.

Below, you can see my conversation with Bell. He gets into some very personal stuff, as do I, so this is perhaps a slightly more raw chat than you might expect. All of Us Strangers can do that to you. At the same time, it’s more than anything else an offshoot of what someone proud of their work is willing to engage in. As with the rest of the cast, once you see Bell in the flick you’ll completely understand why it’s having this effect on folks.
