Interview: Composer Michael Giacchino Chats About the Music Within ‘Society of the Snow’

When you listen to the music of any film composed by Michael Giacchino, you just know that you’re in good hands. The Academy Award-winning composer has an ability to match his sound to the material as well as anyone in the business. His Oscar is more than well deserved, but he still continues to raise his game. Most recently, he did the score for Society of the Snow, which really requires a specific kind of music in order to fully work. The fact that he succeeds so wildly is just another feather in his cap. With the film about to hit Netflix, we recently spoke about the work. Today, that chat comes your way.

In my review of the movie (here), I spoke of the filmmaking, including the score, like so:

Director J.A. Bayona is so deeply invested in honoring the victims as well as the survivors, it leads to some very interesting choices. The script he co-wrote with Nicolás CasariegoJaime Marques, and Bernat Vilaplana not only has a ghost essentially narrating from above, whenever anyone loses their life, they’re honored on screen. It’s incredibly respectful, while also being creative. At the same time, Bayona the director makes the crash absolutely thrilling. Armed with a strong score from composer Michael Giacchino, those moments work very well alongside the quieter ones. The pacing is a little slack, but this moves faster than you’d expect a two and a half hour movie to.

Below, you can hear my conversation with Giacchino. We get into the movie, obviously, but also talk a lot about music in general. He’s a fascinating guy, to say the least, so I was all ears for more or less anything he had to say. Society of the Snow is also just a quality film, one that has one of his best recent scores. Once you see it, if you haven’t already, you’ll understand what I mean…
