‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Screens Opening 17 Minutes at CinemaCon 2026

One of the most substantial and crowd-pleasing segments of Disney’s CinemaCon presentation belonged to The Mandalorian & Grogu, which offered exhibitors an extended look at the highly anticipated big-screen continuation of the hit Disney+ series. Introduced by Jon Favreau, the film marks a major moment for the Star Wars universe as it transitions one of its most beloved recent stories from streaming to theaters, with tickets set to go on sale April 17.

The footage screened at CinemaCon included the film’s opening sequence and extended material totaling roughly the first 17 minutes, immediately establishing a galaxy still grappling with the aftermath of the Empire’s defeat. Rather than a unified threat, the remnants of the Empire have splintered into rogue factions led by ex-imperial warlords, creating a volatile landscape that Pedro Pascal‘s Din Djarin is tasked with navigating. The tone is more grounded and mission-driven, with the Mandalorian and Grogu operating as bounty hunters tracking down imperial fugitives.

The action on display leaned heavily into the cinematic scale promised by the move to theaters. The opening features Din infiltrating an Imperial base, dispatching enemies in close-quarters combat before the situation erupts into full-scale chaos. Grogu, meanwhile, continues to evolve as a force to be reckoned with, using the Force not just defensively but offensively, destroying a little Imperial droid. Another sequence sees Din shooting down an escape pod from within a walker moments before it explodes, underscoring the film’s commitment to large-scale, visceral set pieces.

The footage also delivered a major surprise with the live-action cinematic debut of Zeb Orrelios, who assists Din and Grogu in a high-energy escape. The inclusion of the character signals a deeper integration of animated and live-action corners of the Star Wars universe, something fans have been anticipating for years.

Additionally, Sigourney Weaver’s character is introduced as a key figure who assigns Din a new mission, sending him to seek out Rotta the Hutt in order to rescue a kidnapped child, giving the film a clear narrative throughline beyond its episodic roots.

What stood out most from the presentation was how confidently The Mandalorian & Grogu embraces its transition to the big screen. The scale of the action, the density of the world-building, and the emotional bond between Din and Grogu all feel amplified, suggesting a story designed to justify its theatrical leap.
