Official Trailer Debuts for Jason Reitman’s ‘Saturday Night’

What a ride it has been for Jason Reitman‘s latest film. A few weeks ago, it was still known as SNL 1975 and few beyond our own Joey were even considering it for release this year, let alone awards contention. Then, it got an Oscar-friendly October release date and a new title. Now, Saturday Night, as it’s known, has an official trailer to share, which you can see below.

This is the official plot synopsis: “At 11:30pm on October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television – and culture – forever. Directed by Jason Reitman and written by Gil Kenan & Reitman, Saturday Night is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. Full of humor, chaos, and the magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, we count down the minutes in real time until we hear those famous words…”

Saturday Night is directed by Reitman, with the screenplay by Gil Kenan and Reitman. The film features Gabriel LaBelle as creator Lorne MichaelsCooper Hoffman as NBC executive Dick Ebersol, and Rachel Sennott as Michaels’ ex-wife and SNL writer Rosie Shuster. As you’ll see, there are familiar faces among the supporting cast as well, including Willem Dafoe and J.K. Simmons.

Here now is the trailer for Saturday Night:

I really hope this is an interesting and comprehensive depiction of the actual mechanics and complexities of putting on a live broadcast show and I fear it’s going to just be “hey, remember this thing?” nostalgia bait.

The trailer makes it feel like the odds are 50/50 either way.
