Saltburn has a ton to feast on, both narratively and visually. In terms of the latter, a ton of credit has to go to Academy Award-winning cinematographer Linus Sandgren. The Oscar winner always makes his films look amazing, which this being no exception. In fact, the movie’s dark beauty only makes what happens in it feel even wilder. I spoke to filmmaker Emerald Fennell here about the flick, but today, it’s Sandgren’s turn to talk.
In my review of Saltburn out of the Telluride Film Festival (here), I had this to say:
Emerald Fennell is an incredibly brave filmmaker, pulling no punches with this flick. Her writing is just as sharp as in Promising Young Woman, which won her an Oscar, while her direction is far more ambitious. Along with luscious cinematography from Linus Sandgren, Fennell has beauty and filth in equal measure on display. There are several sequences you’ll have to see in order to believe. Your jaw will drop, not just in shock, but admiration as well.
Below, you can hear my chat with Sandgren. We talk about all aspects of the film, not just the cinematography. Of course, the look of the movie is given its due, but Sandgren is quick to talk about how collaborative this all was with Fennell. We’d spoken back at Telluride during a party, so we were familiar with each other, but it was a pleasure just to sit back and listen to a master. Any of you who have seen Saltburn, and any of you who haven’t should rectify that, can attest to how captivating his work is here.
Here now is my interview with Saltburn cinematographer Linus Sandgren. Enjoy:
