2nd Annual Children’s & Family Emmy® Awards Winners Announced

Hosted by Christopher Jackson, ceremony featured a special opening performance by The Harlem Globetrotters

LOS ANGELES (December 17, 2023) – The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) today announced the winners of the 2nd Annual Children’s & Family Emmy® Awards which took place this evening at the historic Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles and aired live on The Emmys® apps.

“Children’s and Family programming makes a lasting impact on all generations, and it is an honor to celebrate the achievements of tonight’s winners. As the largest of our competitions, we are proud to have this home to acknowledge the work of these on-camera and behind-the-scenes artists,” said Adam Sharp, President and CEO, NATAS.

During the ceremony, Jack Black won his first Emmy for Outstanding Voice Performance In A Children’s Or Young Teen Program category for his work as “Po” on Netflix’s “Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight,” Black gave an enthusiastic acceptance speech.

Referring to his casting in the original “Kung Fu Panda,” Black says, “I gotta thank Jeffrey Katzenberg. 20 years ago, gave me the chance to play this role, and it’s been the role of a lifetime. I’ve had so much fun over the years.”

After thanking his co-stars, the “legendary” James Hong and Rita Ora, Black looked at his phone to check his speech and concluded his thank-you, “Oh my god, I’m glad I looked at it. The main person, my wife Tanya Haden, Dragon Warrior. Tanya Haden, I love you, baby. This is for you.”

Christopher Jackson (“Hamilton,” “And Just Like That,” “Bull”) served as host. 2016 Lifetime Achievement Honoree Frank Welker presented award-winning voice performer Peter Cullen with the Lifetime Achievement Award.  The show included a special performance by the famed Harlem Globetrotters.

Also accepting honors was Peter Cullen, known throughout the world as the voice of the wise and heroic leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime, on the popular 1980s cartoon series “The Transformers,” and as the voice of various other robots, including Ironhide, Slugslinger, Streetwise, Wingspan, and Nightstick, received the Lifetime Achievement Honor at the 2nd Annual Children’s & Family Emmy® Awards.

Cullen also lent his talents to the sad but sincere voice of Eeyore, the eternally pessimistic donkey from “Winnie the Pooh” who views the world through morose-colored glasses. Cullen’s voice has been heard in everything from cartoons and television commercials to theatrical promotions, beginning with the popular T.V. series, “The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh,” to the “House of Mouse.” In addition, he is featured on “Disney’s Duck Tales” and plays Monterey Jack on “Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Rescue Rangers.”

He begins sentimentally, saying “You know, you’re never too old to get recognition. Especially when you’re young, that’s when it’s important, but when you get a little long in the tooth, recognition becomes a strong friend. To help you through the many rejections as an actor you might receive over the course of a career year. And gratefulness becomes a strong feeling for many of us.”

Cullen closed his speech in the iconic voice of Optimus Prime, “And to you, my peers, my friends, I thank you. Till all are one.”

Presenters spanned the gamut of children’s entertainment and included Tommy Davidson (The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder), Raven-Symoné (That’s So Raven), W. Kamau Bell (1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed) and his daughters Samaiyah Smithanne Bell and Juno Chrisanne Bell, Leslie Carrara-Rudolph and Abby Cadabby (Sesame Street), Nonso Anonzie (Sweet Tooth) and Momona Tamada (ONI: God’s Thunder Tale).

Tonight’s presentation was produced by NATAS with Lisa Armstrong and Adam Sharp, Executive Producers; Leon Knoles, Director; Dino Shorté and Adam Ruben, Writers; and Brent Stanton and Rachel Schwartz, Children’s & Family Awards Administration.

The Children’s & Family Emmy ceremony was streamed live on NATAS’ dedicated viewing platform, available on the web at watch.theemmys.tv and via The Emmys apps for iOS, tvOS, Android, FireTV, and Roku (full list at apps.theemmys.tv).
