Here’s an exciting piece of news released on a Saturday. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that David Corenswet is one of the top contenders to play Clark Kent/Superman in James Gunn‘s Superman: Legacy. Gunn took to Twitter to neither confirm nor deny the news, stating that he “would never comment on who is or isn’t AUDITIONING for a role. That’s the actor’s business only & isn’t something I’d make public unless they did it first after the fact […] For now, only one person has been CAST in Superman: Legacy and it isn’t any of the regular players in the Superman world.”
Two other contenders are reportedly in the mix to play Superman, but THR states that their identity remains unknown. Deadline journalist Justin Kroll states that The Menu actor Nicholas Hoult is also one of the top choices to play Superman (he was one of the top choices to play Matt Reeves‘ Batman until the role went to Robert Pattinson), but THR states that he could be playing Lex Luthor. Who to believe? Time will tell, but it’s exciting to see the rumor mill go in all kinds of directions, which will get the internet talking.
Moreover, Sex Education star Emma Mackey is also in the running to play Lois Lane alongside Samara Weaving, Rachel Brosnahan, and Phoebe Dynevor. Brosnahan reportedly delivered an “outstanding” audition, but it is unclear who the top contender for the role may be.
After the success of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, all eyes are on Gunn to deliver in the first installments of the DCU. Superman: Legacy will arrive in theatres on July 11, 2025, and is set to jumpstart the DC Universe after Creature Commandos and Waller act as a taste of what’s to come.

Good luck to anyone who willingly takes that role.
In a weird mirror reversal from Batman’s influence on the careers of actors who play him, Superman seems to be a poisoned chalice.
This next Superman would certainly hope to break the trend…
