The Directors Guild of America released their feature film nominees moments ago, potentially giving us some major insight into the Best Director field at the Oscars. There isn’t always complete crossover between the DGA five and the Oscar five, but four usually is a pretty safe bet. This year, it looks like the DGA nominated […] More
Amanda Seyfried is far more than just one of the Mean Girls. Now, to be sure, she’s phenomenal in that film, but it does a disservice to Seyfried to ignore her other roles. Especially now, she’s finally getting some deserved raves for her work in Mank. Already nominated for a Golden Globe, an Academy Award […] More
You don’t win two Academy Awards without being pretty great at your job. So, it’s not a stretch to call Kirk Baxter an ace editor. His work, not just alongside Angus Wall, but with director David Fincher, has produced some impeccably edited films. The Social Network, along with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, won […] More
David Fincher, hot off awards contender Mank, is finally getting The Killer off the ground. The adaptation of the French graphic novel has been in the works for nearly 15 years, first set up at Paramount in 2007, and then picked up by Netflix after being put into turnaround. The film is being written by […] More
A David Fincher film has a number of hallmarks to it, but one guarantee is some top-notch cinematography. His latest movie, Mank, is certainly another example of this. Fincher’s cinematographer here is Erik Messerschmidt, who is quickly becoming a major name in the business. Messerschmidt is a terrific up and coming DP, one who is […] More
It certainly is a curious case (of Benjamin Button) that the latest film from revered auteur David Fincher should be one that directly flies in the face of auteur theory. Mank, which will be streaming on Netflix by the time you read this, is concerned with the authorship of one of the great auteur vehicles […] More

Bringing the craftsmanship of David Fincher to Old Hollywood is a match made in cinematic heaven. While Fincher is thought of as a cutting-edge filmmaker (and he is), a number of his movies have been set in the past. With Mank, this is not just one of his most overt period pieces, it’s a wild […] More
Despite everything that’s going on, there is still an Oscar season, and, even though the awards ceremony has been pushed back to April and the Academy has extended the eligibility window to February 28, the general consensus is the majority of movies that will be competing for the Oscars have already been released or have […] More
