Netflix dropped the first teaser trailer for Mank, the studio’s eagerly awaited David Fincher film about the making of Citizen Kane, today. Mank stars Gary Oldman as Herman J. Mankiewicz, the screenwriter for the iconic cinema masterpiece and Tom Burke plays Orson Welles, the 26-year-old auteur who fought for control of every aspect of the production, including the screenplay.
On paper, the film has been the one every pundit circled as an early Academy Award favorite, and the teaser trailer does nothing to dampen those expectations. Fincher’s choice to make a movie about the making of Citizen Kane that reflects the style and mood of its subject is genius and, despite only having a minute-long teaser to go by, looks absolutely brilliant.
With a glimpse of cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt’s black-and-white photography, Trish Summerville’s luscious period costumes, a tantalizing score by Oscar-winning composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and what looks to be another Oscar-worthy turn from Oldman, the Mank trailer serves notice that the awards-season front-runner has arrived. That shot of Mank dropping the bottle at the end is just *chef’s kiss*. Its as blatant as fan service gets and I love it.
Right?
