Universal to Skip Influencer Screenings for Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’

One of the more maligned recent practices in the film industry is studios catering to social media influencers. It had gotten to the point where film critics and journalists were almost afterthoughts, screening wise, with those opportunities going to TikTok personalities with large followings. Well, Universal Pictures has decided to do something different with Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey, potentially signaling an eventual change in this practice.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal is going to skip influencer or “word of mouth” screenings for Nolan’s movie, instead opting to just have professional critic screenings for writers. While it doesn’t necessarily mean anything about The Odyssey and its quality, it’s certainly a good potential sign for studios moving away from this misguided practice. Stay tuned to see if others follow their lead.

Social media influencers have no one to blame but themselves for being shut out of pre-release screenings. Act like pissbabies, get treated like pissbabies.

Also true. There’s a world where everyone can coexist, but so far, I’ve yet to see it work, in regards to screenings. So, I’m certainly not upset at this, given that I’m sure I’ll be at one of these screenings shortly…
