Rebecca Miller never intended to have her documentary about legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese turn into a five part series. It was supposed to just be a single film, though once she began, her subject gave so much, doing anything less seemed impossible. The end result, Mr. Scorsese, is an absolute delight for any cinephile, to be sure, and an essential part of Scorsese’s story. I’ve previously spoken to Miller twice before, here and here for her last movie, She Came to Me. Now, she’s back to talk about the doc, as well as the legend that she has in front of her for that whole time.
In my review of the documentary series (here), I said the following about Miller’s work:
Director Rebecca Miller and subject Martin Scorsese explore all sides of the man. Miller has talking heads of all kinds singing the man’s praises, often in their own manner. Listening to Daniel Day-Lewis be the only one to refer to him as Martin, instead of Marty, is interesting, while his childhood friends add an angle we’ve never hear before. There’s also filmmakers who have been influenced by him, including Ari Aster, while Scorsese himself is taking part in a long form interview with Miller. It all flows well and is as entertaining as it is informative.
Below, you can hear my newest conversation with Miller. I was fascinated by how she figured out which Scorsese films to focus different allotments of time on, as well as going about capturing the man himself. Mostly, I wanted to hear about the experience of making the documentary, given the movies and stories she had access to. The fact that I would have enjoyed Mr. Scorsese at double or even triple the length speaks volumes about how effective Miller’s tribute to the legend and his work turned out to be. If you’ve yet to see it, Mr. Scorsese is available on Apple TV+ and truly is a must watch, especially for any Scorsese fan out there.
