Interview: Scott Eastwood Talks Going to War Again with Rod Davis Lurie for ‘Lucky Strike’

There’s a special relationship brewing between actor Scott Eastwood and filmmaker Rod David Lurie. They first collaborated on The Outpost, which told the story of the Battle of Kamdesh, which ended up being the bloodiest engagement of the Afghanistan War. Now, they return to the field of battle, this time heading into the past, with the World War II survival tale Lucky Strike. Inspired by a true story, Lurie trusts Eastwood to carry the film, and he does so quite well. After having seen the movie a few weeks ago, a chat was set up between Eastwood and I, as well as one with Lurie (who I’ve spoke to a few times before). The latter will drop tomorrow, but today, my conversation with Eastwood is here.

In my review here of Lucky Strike, I said the following about Eastwood’s performance:

Scott Eastwood gets a real star showcase here and turns in a focused performance, full of intensity. There are stretches where he’s the only one on the screen, so the film is very much in his hands. The drive and determination to survive, as well as the wit and cunning to do so, are in full force. Eastwood turned in nice work with Lurie previously in The Outpost and does so again here.

Below, you can hear my discussion with Eastwood. I was keen to talk about going to war again for/with Lurie, after The Outpost. The other highlight to me, and the moment where he really leans forward (literally on the Zoom) is when he talks about a WWII veteran who attended a recent premiere screening of the movie. It’s a good story, so make sure you listen. Lucky Strike is a great flick, one of Lurie’s best, in my humble opinion, and the committed turn from Eastwood is certainly one of the reasons why. Give it a shot and you’ll undoubtedly see why.
