The summer movie season might be over, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day still reigns supreme for the sixth weekend in a row in the top spot of the box office. Not even Fall 2: Deadpoint could crack the top 10, bombing incredibly hard in twelfth place with a meager $2.3 million tally. Or Adam Wingard‘s Onslaught, not even appearing in the Comscore grid, but opening in thirteenth place with $1.8 million. These were arguably the weekend’s biggest films, but they couldn’t measure up to the one-two punch of Spider-Man and The Odyssey, which are still making tons of money even after school has begun and more moviegoers have fully returned to work.
They were beaten by re-releases of Cars and Akira, which respectively made $6.1 million and $2.6 million, whilst smaller films such as Coyote vs. Acme and Buddy are legging out much better than expected. Casper Kelly’s feature debut was one of the biggest openings for Roadside Attractions, but it still felt small in comparison. The film rose to 5% this weekend, with a $5.7 million tally, while Dave Green‘s canceled-then-acquired Looney Tunes film is holding out strong with $11.3 million.
The biggest opening for a new release this weekend was Elegance Bratton‘s By Any Means, which grossed $7.4 million, a pretty solid number for one of Paramount-Skydance’s most significant acquisitions to date. The movie is poised to be an awards contender one way or another, especially with Diane Warren aiming for her 18th Best Original Song nomination for this film. While reviews for the movie were mostly mixed, we do know that Warren’s quest for the Oscar is relentless, and a nomination is pretty much locked in at this point.
Now, the fall movie season has truly begun. In the next couple of weeks, genuine contenders and surprising box-office successes will emerge, potentially paving the way for gold in March. The fall festival season is well underway, with Venice and Telluride happening at the same time, and Toronto to join them soon. Some of the bigger movie-related conversations are happening right now, but I’m wondering if there’s any specific film you’re looking forward to for the rest of the year? We know that many have Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday at the top of their lists, but what about something smaller? Chime in and let us know!
