It has been quiet times for James Gray‘s film Paper Tiger, but that is about to change. After having debuted to raves at the Cannes Film Festival, it’s set to open the New York Film Festival on Friday. The movie also supposedly was a big target for inclusion at the Telluride Film Festival, bur the NYFF designation kept it from playing. Now, distributor NEON has confirmed its Oscar campaign categories, as part of a decided push for Gray’s latest. More below.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, NEON is going to be spending on this one, hoping to get Gray and the movie some recognition. There had been some question about where the cast would be campaigned, but now that’s been settled. Miles Teller will compete in Best Actor, while Adam Driver, said by many to be the movie’s highlight, will be in Best Supporting Actor, while Scarlett Johansson will be in Best Supporting Actress. Look for our own Joey Magidson’s review of Paper Tiger this weekend to coincide with NYFF, but if you follow social media, you know he’s already seen and loved it.

This… seems like category fraud, right? Or is the trailer just really misleading?
No, I think they have similar screen time, but I think Teller is the center of the story. Driver just has the best role.
