Even as Netflix has plenty of films to juggle this season, with La bola negra leading the way, Oscar wise, they’re making plans for next season as well. To that end, they’ve made a massive acquisition, scoring the rights to Joel Coen‘s upcoming movie Jack of Spades, which stars Patsy Ferran, Josh O’Connor, Damian Lewis, and Lesley Manville. More below.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to Jack of Spades. Coen directs an adaptation of Frances Frederica Montrésor’s novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age that he co-wrote with brother Ethan Coen, alongside Eleanor Catton and Conor McPherson. The plan is to put the film out in theaters in the fall of 2027, with a major Oscar push coming then as well. So, while this isn’t going to be part of the current awards season, the movie may well be one of the biggest contenders next year, so make a note of it.
