It goes without saying that Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey is going to be an across the board Academy Award player. The film is almost certainly going to score double digit nominations at the Oscars, up and down the line. One of the questions looming for Universal had been where to campaign Anne Hathaway. Would she compete in Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress? Well, the decision has apparently been made. Read on for more.
According to Variety, Hathaway is going to be campaigning in Best Supporting Actress for The Odyssey. That means she’ll be going up against co-star Samantha Morton in Supporting Actress, while Matt Damon will be the only lead performer for the film, as he’s obviously going to be campaigned in Best Actor. Now that the decision has been made, we shall see if Hathaway and/or Morton get nominated for the movie, and if so, if either can become the frontrunner. Stay tuned there.

On the one hand, it’s just straightforwardly true that Penelope is not a co-leading role in this movie. Our friend Matthew A. Stewart and his trusty stopwatch clocked her in as having just under 8% of total screentime in The Odyssey. So yeah, she gives a supporting performance in the film.
On the other hand… a part of me, however foolishly, was hoping that Anne Hathaway, as someone who already has an Academy Award of her own, would willingly “throw” her chances by launching a doomed campaign for Best Lead Actress, clearing the way for Samantha Morton.
Maybe they’ll both get in, anyway.
True story. I certainly think there’s room for both of them though, at least at the moment…
