Adult animated films are rare beasts. It’s a bit surprising, too, considering not just how well something like Sausage Party did nearly a decade ago, but also how popular adult comedy is on the small screen. Look no further than Adult Swim, for example. So, it’s kind of shocking that Fixed took this long to get made, and then to actually be released. Eventually becoming a Netflix film, the raunchy animated comedy is about as outrageous as it gets, but also more than funny enough to feel like a complete work, as opposed to a gimmick.
Fixed is an unlikely passion project, but a passion project it is for filmmaker Genndy Tartakovsky. When you see just how far he goes with horny animated dogs, you may well be shocked, but you’ll also be laughing too hard to care. It’s not exactly high art, but when it comes to animation, it sure does stand out from the pack.
Bull (voice of Adam Devine) is a garden variety good dog, except for his tendency to hump everything around him. One day, his family has had enough, leading to him discovering he’s going to be neutered in the morning. The same thing happened to his friend Rocco (voice of Idris Elba), which concerns him, while the potential for never being able to be with his crush Honey (voice of Kathryn Hahn) worries him even more. So, something needs to be done.
Realizing he needs one last adventure with his pack of buddies, Bull sets out to have a memorable final 24 hours with his balls. Joined by Rocco, as well as Fetch (voice of Fred Armisen) and Lucky (voice of Bobby Moynihan), they set off on a wild day and night, one that will change them all. Whether it’s dealing with his rival Sterling (voice of Beck Bennett), experience various forms of canine sexuality, or potential danger, it’s going to be a time none of them will ever forget.
The voice work is solid across the board, even if no one is really being challenged too much by their roles. Adam Devine in the lead and Idris Elba get the most to do, while Beck Bennett gets to really ham it up as the villain, but they’re mostly just having fun. Fred Armisen, Kathryn Hahn, and Bobby Moynihan know their assignments, as well. There’s no standouts here, but everyone contributes to the final product being rock solid. Supporting voice work here comes from Eric Bauza, Michelle Buteau, River Gallo, Kari Wahlgren, and more.
Co-writer/director Genndy Tartakovsky doesn’t hold back in the slightest here. The screenplay he wrote with Jon Vitti (Tartakovsky and Vitti share Story By credits with Steve Greenberg and Rich Lufrano) never pulls a punch. His direction also leans in to not just the silliness of it all, but also the opportunity to have some style as well. Then, there’s the final act, which includes a thing or two that may well make your jaw drop, in the best way. You’ll understand when you see it.
Fixed is raunchy, to be sure, but it’s also original, and we don’t have nearly enough of that in the animated world. The easily shocked will find this potentially too much to bear, but it’s not made for them in the first place. The movie dropping next week on Netflix will find its tribe, which is ultimately a happy ending for all involved. The flick is dirty fun, but here’s the thing, it’s still a lot of fun, so just sit back and enjoy.
