Box Office Report for the Week Of June 1

Lilo & Stitch is continuing to dominate the box office in its second weekend and is on track to become the second 2025 film to make over $1 billion at the box office. Many box office trades have said that Dean Flesicher Camp’s live-action remake of Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders‘ animated classic will be the first movie to reach this milestone, but anyone who said this clearly didn’t pay attention to Ne Zha 2, which made more than $2 billion worldwide, and $1 billion in China alone!

That said, it’s great to finally see a Hollywood tentpole close to reach that number, as A Minecraft Movie almost hit it with a $944.3 million global tally. However, with Lilo & Stitch having made $610 million globally in two weeks, they are well on their way to getting that coveted mark, which Disney has been steadily making with their biggest movies for some time. With summer in full swing, the studio is looking to capture its pre-COVID glory days and return to the top of the North American and international box office.

There were a few new movies that came out this week, in an attempt to wax off the bigger titles, such as Karate Kid: Legends, which made a fairly unimpressive $21 million, even though its fanbase is relatively significant after Cobra Kai finished an incredible six-season run earlier this year. Reviews haven’t been particularly good, which could’ve hampered some of its word-of-mouth. However, the film has already grossed over $47 million internationally, and its budget was only $45 million. It could very well turn a profit in the next few weeks, as the future of the franchise is still yet to be determined.

As for RackaRacka’s Bring Her Back, the film opened lower than their previous directorial effort, Talk to Me, at $7.0 million instead of $10.0 million, though critical reviews and word-of-mouth aren’t as strong as their feature filmmaking debut. Some love it, while others vehemently hate it. I’m in the middle-ground where I appreciate how unpleasant they are trying to make us feel with some of the most incredibly disturbing imagery I’ve seen in ages, but the plot doesn’t make much narrative sense. Still, such divisive word of mouth is what A24 strives for, and after a meager beginning, their eyes are set on capturing the hearts of moviegoers with Celine Song’s latest film, Materialists, which will make its way to cinemas in two weeks!
