For years now, Felicity Jones has made an impression on me. It began with Like Crazy, where she delivered an incredible breakthrough performance. However, she’s good in everything, and often great, whether it’s small-scale dramas or epic science fiction blockbusters. It all culminated in an Academy Award nomination in Best Actress for The Theory of Everything. Now, she’s back in the Oscar conversation with The Brutalist, so the opportunity to chat with her came about. Of course, I made it happen, and today, that discussion comes your way.
In my review out of the Toronto International Film Festival (here), I praised Jones and the cast like so:
Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce all do some of their best work here, painting on an expansive canvas. Brody portrays the evolution, or perhaps de-evolution, of a man with the commitment of a biopic. He’s intense and every bit the brutalist that his work is, but there’s hints of tenderness. It’s easily one of his most complex parts to date, and he nails it. Jones doesn’t show up until the second half, but is a force of nature from back in Eastern Europe. At times, the script almost makes her a co-lead, though on occasion her narrative arc feels a bit stock by comparison. Then, there’s Pearce, who is best in show as a man who you’re always leery of. An ultimate act of betray is shocking, but also really does hammer home the power imbalance in the relationship Pearce’s Harrison has with Brody’s László.
Below, you can hear my conversation with Jones. We didn’t have a ton of time to chat, but we get into not just The Brutalist, but Like Crazy and even Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as well. Hearing about how these sets can be the same or different, as well as filmmaker Brady Corbet creating an intimate yet epic set here, is truly fascinating. She’s a lovely woman, excellent in this movie, and deserving of all the acclaim she’s been receiving. With the flick about to hit theaters, you’ll be able to see for yourself very soon…
Here now is my interview with The Brutalist co-star Felicity Jones. Enjoy:
