Happy National Dog Day! What better time than now to look back at one of the most prestigious awards available to canine actors and reminisce about the very best of them? No, the Palm Dog is not an “official” award from the Cannes Film Festival – it was originally started as a joke by film critic Toby Rose that eventually became an annual tradition voted on by the international critics who attend the festival, and has since been taken over by media company Woopets – but every year, press outlets treat it with arguably even greater anticipation than other unofficial festival prizes from the likes of the Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique or the Jury Œcuménique because… I mean, come on! Who doesn’t want to publicize a jury of film critics making an official declaration of who among the festival screenings was a gooboy or googurl?
The most recent recipient of this award was Kodi as Cosmos, literally the star/defendant of Dog on Trial, edging out a reportedly very competitive slate of good dogs this year. I have not yet seen Laetitia Dosch’s courtroom… drama? Comedy? I guess I’ll find out soon enough, but for now, Kodi was not eligible to be considered among this top ten:
10. Britney from War Pony
9. Einstein from The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)
8. The canine cast of Dogman
7. Baby Boy from Behind the Candelabra
6. Lucy from Wendy and Lucy
5. Lucky the Multipoo from Arabian Nights
4. The entire canine cast of White God
3. Nellie from Paterson
2. Messi from Anatomy of a Fall
1. Uggie from The Artist
