Editing seems like one of the most monumental tasks in film. To take everything shot on set, find the rhyme and reason of it all, before piecing it back together into what we see on screen? It’s nuts. To do it with action sequences is just a whole other ballgame, too, so when someone like Eddie Hamilton can do it so well, you take notice. Nominated for Best Film Editing at the Oscars last year for Top Gun: Maverick, he makes it all look easy. In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, he arguably had his toughest assignment yet. So, obviously I wanted to talk to him about it. Today, that back and forth comes your way…
In my review here of the film, I said the following about its filmmaking:
Filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie is, aside from Cruise, very much the creative force of this franchise. Here, the plot machinations and villain’s plan make less sense than usual, but the forward momentum is still very much there. The script he penned with Bruce Geller and Erik Jendresen doesn’t make a ton of sense, but the action scenes paper that over. McQuarrie’s direction plays to Cruise’s strengths, and while nothing rivals some of the biggest stunts in the series, it all manages to thrill.
Below, you can hear my conversation with Hamilton. We talk a lot about the collaboration between Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie, and Hamilton himself, as they combine to really hone in on some action movie perfection. We also talk a bit about Top Gun: Maverick, as well as prior Mission: Impossible films (plus the upcoming next installment), so there’s all sorts of Cruise collaborations being discussed. Hamilton is a very nice guy, very pleased to be asked about his work, and gives some wonderful answers. So, this is quite the interesting chat, if I do say so myself!

Here now is my interview with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One editor Eddie Hamilton. Enjoy:
