France Selects ‘The Taste of Things’ Instead of ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ As Their Oscar Submission

Here’s a bit of surprising news for the Best International Feature race at the Oscars. France, long a power player in the category, was seen as likely to select Anatomy of a Fall as their pick to compete for an Academy Award nomination (and potentially a win, too). After all, it has had raves almost across the board (including from our own editor Joey Magidson here), is seen as a Best Actress contender for Sandra Hüller, as well as Best Director and/or Best Original Screenplay for filmmaker Justine Triet. Well, that’s no longer the case.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, France has opted for The Taste of Things instead. The movie, from Tran Anh Hùng, stars Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel in a food-centric tale. So, while Anatomy of a Fall is still eligible everywhere else, a citation in International Feature will not be in the cards for the legal drama. Could The Taste of Things get in instead? Time will tell, but this is definitely a surprising decision.
