A veteran of the big and small screens for decades, Carla Gugino has worked with everyone from Nicolas Cage and Brian De Palma to Robert Rodriguez and Mickey Rourke, appearing in blockbusters like Spy Kids and Watchmen to the highly acclaimed Haunting of Hill House Netflix horror series.
Her latest for Netflix is Gunpowder Milkshake, an ensemble action thriller from Big Bad Wolves director Navot Papushado. Co-written by Papushado and Ehud Lavski, the film centers on Sam (Karen Gillan), an assassin forced to reunite with some of her mother’s (Lena Headey) old associates when she’s on the run from a dangerous organization led by Nathan (Paul Giamatti).
Gugino plays one of those associates, Madeleine (Carla Gugino), who lines up alongside Anna May (Angela Bassett) and Florence (Michelle Yeoh) as a trio of kickass women ready to prepare the next generation to take on the action world with the best of them.
I spoke with Gugino recently about her legacy as a bonafide genre queen, her knack for working with auteur directors, and the timeless appeal of the Spy Kids movies.
