Just a few weeks ago, I posted a predictions update piece that came right as the fall film festival season was getting underway. I was in Colorado for the start of the Telluride Film Festival, which would kick off that day, while the Venice Film Festival had just started up. It was truly the calm […] More
Welcome back to the Awards Radar Podcast. In each episode, Editor Joey Magidson (that’s me!) will be joined by some of the staff of Awards Radar to talk about the latest in film, television, and entertainment in general. The show will obviously have an awards season slant to it, but we won’t forget about other […] More
The city of Cape Town is one of the most beautiful in the world. But under its idyllic visage hides dark truths from the apartheid era. That juxtaposition is one of the central themes of John Trengove’s new film The Smell of Apples, based on the novel of the same name. It follows an 11-year […] More
While films examining sexual assault against women have become more commonplace, few filmmakers have explored such violations against young men. Inspired by a novel, Amalie Næsby Fick’s debut feature What Lies Between Us follows a trio of mothers, as they navigate the fallout of a sexual assault involving their young sons. This gripping drama stars […] More
There are few better underdog tales than Rocky, except, perhaps the story of how that film came to be. As such, you don’t actually have to know the movie Rocky to enjoy I Play Rocky. Now, appreciating Sylvester Stallone‘s star making vehicle helps, but this flick is so good, so entertaining, and such a crowd […] More
When the Toronto International Film Festival added Zack Snyder‘s passion project, The Last Photograph, as a surprise to their lineup, I was genuinely curious. I usually like Snyder’s movies well enough, though rarely are over the moon for them. I’m on record thinking the Snyder Cut is an improvement on Justice League, for example. I […] More
A good high concept can be a great starting point for a genre work. In the case of Everybody Wants to Fuck Me, the high concept is able to travel across genres, which you don’t always see. What if Obsession was, at least initially, more of a comedy? In broad strokes, that’s the set up […] More
It has been over a decade since Courteney Cox made her directorial debut with Just Before I Go. Now, she’s back with Evil Genius, which shows massive growth as a filmmaker from her. This is a dark, funny, and deeply assured work, with strong acting, crisp visuals, and a real sense of pacing. I sure […] More
Here are the Venice prizes: Golden Lion for Best Film Woman Unknown, May el-Toukhy Silver Lion, Grand Jury Prize Possible Love, Lee Chang-dong Silver Lion for Best Director Ilya Khrzhanovsky, DAU Special Jury Prize NAZA, Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor Award for Best Screenplay A Good Little Soldier, Stéphane Brizé, Coralie Amédéo and Olivier Gorce Volpi Cup […] More
There’s a bad version of the plot of Fjord that comes off like straight up right wing conservative propaganda. Seeing a conservative Christian family having to fight the bureaucracy of a liberal government feels like the stuff of Pure Flix’s cinematic dreams. So, the fact that this film is not just good, but won the […] More
I love getting to see the supremely talented Léa Seydoux get a leading role. Even more so, when she’s given a challenging one. That’s certainly the case with Gentle Monster, a dark drama that starts with an unsettling premise and goes from there. Unfortunately, while Seydoux is great, the movie is not. It’s a first […] More
Following up a Best Picture winner is always a challenge for any filmmaker. What do you do for an encore? Sometimes, they have a blank check to pursue a passion project. Other times, they just struggle to recapture the magic. In the case of Siân Heder, she’s managed to follow up CODA with Being Heumann, […] More
