Zoey Deutch is back! I adore her, admire her work, and have a blast whenever we talk. One of the first films of hers that clued me in to her talents was Everybody Wants Some!!, from Richard Linklater. So, when she reunited with Linklater for Nouvelle Vague, I was pumped. Now, with the movie getting a Criterion Collection edition on Tuesday, the opportunity to chat yet again presented itself. As you all know, Deutch has been a guest on the site several times before, chatting with me here (for The Outfit), here (for Not Okay), here (for The Threesome and a brief bit about Nouvelle Vague), and here (for Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass). Now, she’s returned once more to commemorate Nouvelle Vague joining Criterion this week.

Zoey Deutch, Aubry Dullin, and Guillaume Marbeck are all very good here, not just looking like their counterparts, but capturing their spirits as well. Deutch is a convincing fish out of water on set, someone who knows how things are usually done, yet also is kind of curious about this very new way. It’s not a showy performance, to be sure, but it is a very appealing one.
Below, you can hear my latest chat with Deutch. This is a casual twenty minutes spent catching up and getting into what it’s like to be a part of movie magic, via the wizard that is Linklater. We both have stories we share about him, as well as laugh a lot, so I think this is a rather fun conversation. Deutch is great in Nouvelle Vague and obviously proud of the work, so she’s not shy about discussing it. If you’ve yet to see the flick, it’s obviously available to stream on Netflix, but now that there’s a fancy Criterion 4K (or Blu-ray if you’d prefer), that’s very much the ideal way to take this one in.
