For years, Zoey Deutch has been one of my favorite actresses. Whether it’s Everybody Wants Some or Flower (her breakthroughs for me) or especially Buffaloed, she has given turn after turn of terrific work. That she isn’t a bigger star legitimately bugs me, but her time is coming. The Outfit, for example, shows off a whole new side of her, which will do wonders for her career. It was a long time coming, but last week I finally got to hop on a Zoom and talk to her about the work I appreciate so much. Now, it’s time to show it off to all of you.
Below, you can see my conversation with Deutch. Yesterday, I shared my chat with Dylan O’Brien (here), but today it’s Deutch’s turn. Having long been a fan of hers, it was delightful not only to get to have this discussion, but also to find out she’s well aware of my championing of her. That felt good, I won’t lie. It doesn’t hurt that she’s excellent in the film. With The Outfit coming out in a manner of days, you’ll be able to see the flick and understand why I’m so high on her/it. This is a movie that grows on you, so especially if you’re a fan of someone in the cast (Mark Rylance, for example), you’re in for an acting treat…
This is some of what I had to say about Deutch and The Outfit cast in my review:
From top to bottom, this is one strong cast. Mark Rylance makes it all look so easy, so you almost don’t appreciate what an ace performance this is. The same goes for Zoey Deutch, who has all of her charm and charisma on hand, but only uses it sparingly. This restrained performance is one of her best. The same goes for Dylan O’Brien, who gets to dig into a juicy role. Johnny Flynn goes bigger than the rest, but he’s still solid. Of course, Rylance is best in show, since he’s just such a master, though Deutch isn’t far behind. Rounding out the cast are the likes of Nikki Amuka-Bird and Simon Russell Beale.
Here now is my interview with The Outfit star Zoey Deutch. Enjoy:
The Outfit is in theaters this weekend!
