Interview: Dylan O’Brien Discusses the Opportunity of ‘The Outfit’

Dylan O’Brien will always have a special place in my heart, for a pretty unique reason. You see, one of his first films, The First Time, was actually the movie that I got my first true pull quote from. A quote of mine was in the Village Voice, and ever since then, I’ve kept my eye out for his work. This year, he has a flick that really shows a whole new side of him in The Outfit. Acting opposite Zoey Deutch (our interview with her drops tomorrow) and Mark Rylance, he more than holds him own. Recently, during the film’s press day, I was given the chance to hop on Zoom and chat with O’Brien. The audio of that conversation comes your way now…

In my review of The Outfit, I had this to say about O’Brien and the cast:

From top to bottom, this is one strong cast. Mark Rylance makes it all look so easy, so you almost don’t appreciate what an ace performance this is. The same goes for Zoey Deutch, who has all of her charm and charisma on hand, but only uses it sparingly. This restrained performance is one of her best. The same goes for Dylan O’Brien, who gets to dig into a juicy role. Johnny Flynn goes bigger than the rest, but he’s still solid. Of course, Rylance is best in show, since he’s just such a master, though Deutch isn’t far behind. Rounding out the cast are the likes of Nikki Amuka-Bird and Simon Russell Beale.

Below, you can hear my chat with O’Brien. Not only do we talk about The Outfit, we discussed Love & Monsters a bit, as well as our shared affection for the New York Mets. That certainly was a fun bit for both of us, to the point where the publicist had to shoo us back on track. O’Brien is a very nice dude and I can’t wait to see what he does next…
