It’s always a pleasure to speak to Zoey Deutch. I’ve previously interviewed her for The Outfit (here) as well as Not Okay (here), and it’s never anything less than a blast. So, when I knew she was going to be doing a bit of promotion for The Threesome, I had to set up another discussion. Plus, not only is this film about to hit theaters, she has another movie currently doing the festival circuit in Nouvelle Vague that has her in the awards conversation. It all added up to an obvious choice to set this up earlier in the week. Today, it comes your way.
In my review of The Threesome (here), I said the following about Deutch and her main co-stars:
Zoey Deutch is easily best in show here, though that’s not a critique of Ruby Cruz or Jonah Hauer-King. It’s simlply praise for Deutch, who adds so many layers to her character, often with just a look. There’s a deep understanding of this woman on her part, which Deutch utilizes to once again knock our socks off. Hauer-King is our protagonist and he does a good job as a guy needing to do some growing up, albeit spurred on by a situation he could not have predicted. Cruz is very solid, though you wish she had a touch more to do, given the talent she’s exuding in scenes with the two of them. Deutch is the one who elevates things.
Below, you can see my latest chat with Deutch. Not only do we talk about The Threesome, having both just returned from the Telluride Film Festival, we get into a bit of Richard Linklater and Nouvelle Vague as well. When it comes to The Threesome, we dance around some spoilers, so fear not. As always, she’s funny, lovely, and just overall wonderful, so this shaping up to be such a good year for her is a pleasure to witness.
Here now is my interview with Nouvelle Vague and The Threesome star Zoey Deutch. Enjoy:
The Threesome is in theaters this weekend!
