No one does comedy quite like the team of Ken Marino and David Wain. Whether it’s Wet Hot American Summer or They Came Together, their films are one of a kind. Now, they’re back with their latest laugh riot, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, and as a bonus, they have one of my favorite young actresses in Zoey Deutch as the lead. Deutch has been a guest on the site several times before, chatting with me here (for The Outfit), here (for Not Okay), and here (for The Threesome and Nouvelle Vague). Last week, the three of them spent some time discussing the movie with me. Today, as it hits theaters, our talk comes your way.
In my review of the flick here, I said the following about Deutch, as well as Marino and Wain:
Zoey Deutch dives headfirst into a broad comedy like this, absolutely relishing the opportunity to get silly again. She’s able to make Gail a babe in the woods but also someone you laugh with, not at. It’s a wildly enjoyable turn. Deutch started out in comedies and was always a talented comedic actress, so it’s a pleasure to watch her back at it.
Filmmaker David Wain, again co-writing with Ken Marino, continues to make it look easy. Few can make a silly comedy like Marino and Wain, especially as they pack their flicks with extra bits that only subsequent viewings reveal. Is Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass on the same level as Wet Hot American Summer or They Came Together? No, not quite. At the same time, is this, scattershot approach and all, funnier than most other 2026 releases? You bet. Marino and Wain have a hit rate that allows some of the jokes to miss, as you only have seconds to wait before the next one, which probably will hit.
Below, you can see my chat with Deutch, Marino, and Wain. I was actually grateful for this talk, as it was a way to laugh and smile after recently losing my dog, which does come up here. Should I have kept it to myself? Probably. Were they very sweet about it? Yes, they were. Then, we’re talking Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, which is fascinating to discuss. Namely, I was curious about how they make comedy look so easy, as well as what it’s like to have an audience respond to the jokes they’ve come up with. It’s a fun conversation, even with my dog-related sadness, so I’m sure everyone will enjoy. We even work in a little Bruce Springsteen chatter at the very end, given Marino and Wain having the Middle Aged Dad Jam Band. You can see them do Born to Run below, and definitely give a shot to Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass. If you like to laugh, this one is for you.
Here now is my interview with Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass star Zoey Deutch, co-star/writer Ken Marino, and co-writer/director David Wain. Enjoy:
