Ranking the Best Performances to Date From Zoey Deutch

Zoey Deutch is, for my money, one of the best and most slept on actresses in the business. The way she can handle, and has handled, numerous genres, is something to behold. Comedy or drama, she’s up to the task. Greedily, she’s also a splendid person to talk to, as I’ve been lucky enough to do several times before. She’s spoken to me here (for The Outfit), here (for Not Okay), and here (for The Threesome and Nouvelle Vague), and just yesterday here (for Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Tape). Her first Oscar nomination is not far off, I’m sure of it. With Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Tape now in theaters, it felt like a great time to rank her work. So, that’s exactly what I did…

In my review of Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Tape (here), I said the following about Deutch’s performance:

Zoey Deutch dives headfirst into a broad comedy like this, absolutely relishing the opportunity to get silly again. She’s able to make Gail a babe in the woods but also someone you laugh with, not at. It’s a wildly enjoyable turn. Deutch started out in comedies and was always a talented comedic actress, so it’s a pleasure to watch her back at it. 

Below, you can see how Deutch stacks up for me. I think her two best performances, which happen to be criminally under-seen, are Buffaloed and Flower. Not far off is Nouvelle Vague, which got her somewhat close to an Academy Award nomination last year for Best Supporting Actress. No matter where you look, Deutch is doing something interesting and memorable.
