Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord is fresh off of winning the Palme d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, so naturally the attention has turned to its eventual awards campaign. One potential hiccup for distributor NEON has loomed as to whether the movie would be eligible for Best International Feature at the Oscars, given the amount of English spoken within. Well, good news for those hoping it’ll be in contention, as you can see below.
According to Variety, Fjord will be eligible for the Academy Award category, and given the field’s new rules, its Cannes win means it doesn’t need a country to submit it, either. So, Mungiu’s film is Oscar eligible and likely an early frontrunner for the International Feature win. The Oscars are a long way away, of course, but NEON can plan accordingly. The piece at Variety has all of the details, but stay tuned to see how Fjord fares when the season gets underway later on this year.
