Sunday Scaries: A Mother’s Day Without One is Not For the Faint of Heart (Revisited for 2026)

Once again, here is something a little different today for the Sunday Scaries, much like I’ve done for the past few years. Today is, of course, Mother’s Day, which used to be a happy occasion in my family. We’d almost always go to my grandmother’s apartment and jointly celebrate her, my mother, my aunt, all the moms. Obviously, that has not been the case the past couple of years, after mine passed suddenly in January of 2023. I wrote about losing my mother here right after it happened, but in the ensuing months, it felt like a scary day. Her birthday falls earlier this month, but outside of family and a few friends, no one would have known that. Today, however, is a day where almost everyone else gets to be happy and spend time with the woman who raised them. I don’t get to do that, so the horror is quite real today. That being said, this is mostly just an excuse to say that you all should appreciate your mother and tell them that. It’s going to be a tough day for me, one not for the faint of heart, but that shouldn’t be your story. Three years later, I’m still grieving, but I’m also trying to not let it define me.

Truly, I want everyone to enjoy their day today. Whether I do or not is irrelevant, but I sincerely hope you do, and I already do feel that it’ll be a better time than last year. We rarely appreciate people and things in this world until we lose them, so try to not do that. I’ll be spending part of the day with my grandmother, who I do still have, so even if your mom is gone, if you have someone, be with them. It does help.

So, hug your mother today. I wish I could…

Let me leave you with a part of the Bruce Springsteen song The Wish. He wrote it about his mom, who he also recently lost, so it truly resonates. Here’s the chorus:

It ain’t no phone call on Sunday, flowers or a mother’s day card
It ain’t no house on a hill with a garden and a nice little yard
I got my hot rod down on Bond Street, I’m older but you’ll know me in a glance
We’ll find us a little rock ‘n roll bar and baby we’ll go out and dance

Happy Mother’s Day, ma. I miss you.

Awards Radar wishes everyone a happy Mother’s Day. Tell your mothers that you love them!

Thinking of you Joey and your Grandmother, it must be devastating to lose a daughter. All the best.
