Box Office Report for the Week of May 10

The loins are once again girded this weekend, as The Devil Wears Prada 2 stays at the top of the box office. Not even Johnny Cage could defeat Andy Sachs and Miranda Priestly (maybe they should compete in Mortal Kombat), as the sequel to David Frankel‘s 2006 film snagged $43 million at the domestic box office this weekend, putting its global tally at $433 million.

Antoine Fuqua‘s Michael is also tracking to finish big at the box office, arriving in third place this weekend with a $36.5 million domestic cume, bringing its global gross to $577 million. The film is now set to finish in the $800 million-$1 billion range, which would make it one of the highest-grossing biopics of all time, potentially surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody and Oppenheimer.

For Simon McQuoid’s sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat, the film received better reviews than the last installment, but didn’t quite hit its expected #1 spot. Still, it was able to snag $40 million at the box office, after the last film grossed $84 million in total during the COVID-19 pandemic, while it was simultaneously released on HBO Max. Globally, the sequel has already hit $63 million and will likely gain legs to surpass the first film’s cumulative earnings. In that regard, a third film is pretty much confirmed, which will hopefully surpass this one.

Some smaller fare films also made their way to cinemas, including Amazon’s The Sheep Detectives, which, despite incredible reviews (way better than most people thought it would be), opened with $15 millio domestically and $28 million globally. Its budget is on the $75 million side, and since there hasn’t been much family entertainment in cinemas for some time, the movie could become a sleeper hit, provided audience word of mouth is as strong as its critical reception.

Finally, James Cameron has returned to the big screen, five months after Avatar: Fire and Ash. And while Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) might not be as commercially profitable as his previous films, it wasn’t necessarily intended to make $1 billion. The film opened with a modest $7.5 million and has already recouped its $20 million budget with a $20.1 million global tally. Plus, its target audience is turning movie theatres into a concert hall, so the job is already done in that regard.

Here is the full list of the top ten films of the weekend:
