Notably absent from the 2026 Cannes Film Festival lineup was the Werner Herzog film Bucking Fastard. Now, there are numerous reasons why a movie doesn’t wind up being announced for Cannes. Sometimes, they even get added at a later date. Well, it turns out, Herzog turned down an invite to the festival, for a very specific reason. Read on to find out.
According to Variety, Herzog has opted against taking his movie Bucking Fastard to Cannes. A spokesman for the film said in a statement “Bucking Fastard was invited as an official selection at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival which the filmmakers declined,” though that didn’t get into why. The story says that the reason is because it wasn’t given a Competition slot. Herzog had hoped for the chance to see his leads, Kate Mara and Rooney Mara, be eligible for awards, given their performances as sisters. Instead, it’ll be skipping the festival altogether.
