Awards Radar Community: On Presidents’ Day, Let Us Know Your Favorite Fictional President

The American President (1995) Cinematography by John Seale

Folks, today is Presidents’ Day. As we celebrate (or mostly celebrate, with at least one notably large exception) the men (for now, at least…hopefully, though at this point, who knows) who have guided the United States over the years, it’s only natural to think about Presidents from the world of movies and television. So, for another special holiday Awards Radar Community Question this week, the cinematic Commanders in Chief are on our minds. Namely, we’re once again asking the following: who is your favorite cinematic President?

If you’re just thinking of cinematic Commanders in Chief, I’d like to put forward several options to consider. They include Jeff Bridges in The ContenderMichael Douglas in The American PresidentHarrison Ford in Air Force OneMorgan Freeman in Deep ImpactJack Nicholson in Mars AttacksKevin Pollack in DeterrenceBill Pullman in Independence Day, and Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove. Now, if you include presumed Presidents as well, we can get to ten by including George Clooney in The Ides of March and John Travolta in Primary Colors. This doesn’t even take into account playing real-life Presidents, like Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln. On the small screen, there’s obviously Martin Sheen from The West Wing, butt here’s also Julia Louis-Dreyfus from Veep. So, we’re actually spoiled for choice. Plus, we have even more recent ones that could join the list too, if they sustain over the years, as film (Viola Davis in G20) and television (Robert De Niro in Zero Day), have given us additional options.

The choice is now yours. On this Presidents’ Day, which fictional interpretation is your favorite? Whichever chief you’d like to hail, we want to know about it. I may have listed mine above, but feel free to suggest some others. Everyone is on the table…
