Interview: Ari Aster Discusses ‘Eddington’ and the Bleak State of the World Influencing His Art

Ari Aster is arguably one of the most singular filmmakers out there. Like him, love him, hate him, or if you’re confused by him and his movies, they’re ones that compel you to discuss them. That alone makes him worthy of consideration and respect. With Eddington beginning its home entertainment run this week, with a bow on 4K and Blu-ray later on this month, he was made available for some time to chat. Yesterday, I was able to spend more than twenty minutes on Zoom with Aster discussing, well, the world, in addition to his most recent film. Today, that wide-ranging conversation comes your way.

Below, you can hear my discussion with Aster. Eddington is obviously the focus here, though I do briefly mention Beau is Afraid. I was fascinated to hear from him about making divisive work, what fuels his ideas, and how the world is filtering through into his flicks. Aster is definitely considerate of what he’s putting out into the world, but also very clear about how this is what he has to be doing, so it makes for a very interesting back and forth. I know I could have kept talking to him for another hour, easily. Starting today, you can now watch Eddington at home, so if you’re at all interested in Aster’s work, now is the time to check it out…

Here now is my interview with Eddington filmmaker Ari Aster. Enjoy:

Eddington is now available on Home Entertainment and hits 4K/Blu-ray in two weeks!
