As a lifelong Brooklyn resident, the borough is very much a part of my DNA. So, when I see it on film, I’m always interested in how it gets depicted. Often, it’s a chaotic depiction, which isn’t wrong, either. However, seeing a more mellow and romantic depiction also is important, and we don’t see that as often. So, a movie like Love, Brooklyn doing exactly that turns out to be a breath of fresh air. With the flick set to start its theatrical run at the end of the month, I sat down a few days ago on Zoom with director Rachael Holder to talk all things Brooklyn. Today, in advance of the film’s release, I’m happy to present our discussion to you all.
In my review back at the Sundance Film Festival (here), I said the following about Holder’s direction:
Director Rachael Holder and writer Paul Zimmerman are all about vibes here, as the film is pretty light on plot. It’s a slight work, and fairly broad overall, but there’s charm to spare. Holder and Zimmerman love their characters, which does rub off on their audience. While you might wish things were sharper, Brooklyn is given a sheen that makes it appear like just about the most beautiful spot that New York has to offer.
Below, you can hear my conversation with Holder. It’s all about Brooklyn and vibes here, which is very much what the film is going for. We talk about shooting in the borough, the feel of getting the movie made, debuting at Sundance, and more. She’s a lovely person and a director with a very specific vision, so it was a pleasure to chat with her. Love, Brooklyn hits theaters at the end of the month in New York, before expanding wide on September 5th, so be sure to check it out!

Here now is my interview with Love, Brooklyn director Rachael Holder. Enjoy:
Love, Brooklyn is in theaters on August 29th at the Angelika in NYC and wide on September 5th!
