Box Office Report for the Week of June 8

Lilo & Stitch is continuing its road to becoming the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year, as it has grossed $32.5 million this weekend and now has grossed $772 million globally. It isn’t as high as A Minecraft Movie, but it is on its way to outpace its total gross very soon. Nothing can stop this juggernaut, and seemingly nothing will, as the landscape seems relatively quiet until F1 The Movie bows out later this year.

Apart from the incredible momentum the film has been riding on since its release late last month, this weekend has been relatively quiet. The well-received From the World of John Wick: Ballerina couldn’t stop Lilo & Stitch from being the number one film of the weekend, but it still managed to grow a modest $25 million in its domestic opening weekend, for a global tally of $51 million.

Despite reports of extensive additional photography done by director Chad Stahelski, the film’s budget is reported to be in the $80 to $90 million range, which could make this spinoff of the John Wick franchise a success if it continues to perform well. The critical reception has been pretty good, though not reaching the all-time highs of John Wick: Chapter 4, and it’s unsurprising that many were looking forward to seeing the world expand further than its titular character, played by Keanu Reeves.

Wes Anderson‘s The Phoenician Scheme has also expanded in several markets this weekend, and has grossed $6.2 million domestically, putting its worldwide box office gross at $18 million. It’s a much smaller opening compared to Anderson’s last film, Asteroid City, but still quite a good per-theater average, as the acclaimed filmmaker makes his return to the big screen with another eccentric comedy, though this one is much more reflexive than his previous project.

Next week, Lilo & Stitch could face some competition with Dean DeBlois‘ live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. Interestingly enough, DeBlois co-directed the original Lilo & Stitch with Chris Sanders, who also helped the Canadian filmmaker bring his animated adaptation of Cressida Cowell‘s book series to life. Which remake will fare better this year? We will know soon enough, but let’s see if the How to Train Your Dragon fandom is just as passionate for the live-action retelling of an animated classic as were audiences for Lilo & Stitch…
