Michael B. Jordan has a star quality to him that just permeates any performance he gives. Jordan has made a very strong impression in a very short amount of time. Even in that compressed timeframe, he’s become a true A-lister. Now, with his latest film Sinners opening, it feels like a perfect moment to celebrate his work so far. So, that’s just what we’re about to do…
In my review of Sinners (here), I said the following about Jordan, as well as some of the ensemble:
Michael B. Jordan gives one of his best performances, while newcomer Miles Caton makes a major impression. They’re joined by a very fun Delroy Lindo, providing some of the comic relief, as well as a heartbreaking Wunmi Mosaku in being the highlights. Caton is a musical talent, to be sure, but has some real acting chops as well. Watch out for him. Lindo is a scene stealer, while Mosaku not only provides some of the most emotional elements, but also helps to explain the vampiric situation in a way that’s not just an expositional dump. As for Jordan, he gives the brothers wildly different personalities, allowing you never to confuse them. He’s relishing the opportunity, to be sure, and it shows.
Below, you can see how I size up Jordan to date. Unsurprisingly, it’s his work with Ryan Coogler that dominates the top of the list. In particular, his turns as Adonis Creed in Creed, as well as the sequels, are hard to beat. He’s obviously also great in Coogler’s Black Panther and Fruitvale Station, alongside the about to be released Sinners. Interestingly, Jordan hasn’t had that many film roles, either, so this is more than just the cream of the crop. If anything, it’s a list that’s still in need of growing, but clearly off to an amazing start.
Here now is how I would rank Michael B. Jordan’s best work so far. Behold:
10. That Awkward Moment
9. A Journal for Jordan
8. Fahrenheit 451
7. Creed II
6. Just Mercy
5. Creed III
4. Sinners
3. Black Panther
2. Fruitvale Station
1. Creed
