Interview: Judy Greer Chats About the Opportunity and Rewards of Taking the Lead Role in ‘Eric Larue’

Judy Greer is somehow both one of the most consistently utilized actresses in Hollywood and yet also among its most under-utilized. She’s criminally underserved in many of her roles, despite having a real talent for getting a lot out of a little. It’s also one of the things that makes her such a fascinating performer. Whether it’s in Elizabethtown, Halloween/Halloween Kills, Archer, or any number of other projects, she just shines. So, having her get to be the lead in Eric Larue is an absolute treat. So too was getting the chance to spend some time on Zoom with her. I spoke to Michael Shannon here earlier in the week about helming the film. Today, it’s Greer’s turn to chat.

In my review of the movie here, I said the following about Greer’s stunning turn:

Judy Greer has rarely been better than she is here, turning in a quietly devastating performance. So few filmmakers give her this sort of opportunity, so she more than makes the most of it. There’s a ton of observing her facial expressions, or sometimes the lack thereof one, and she absolutely runs with it. It’s impeccable work.

Below, you can hear my conversation with Greer. While we do talk plenty about Eric Larue, we end up discussing far more than just this flick. There’s some fun bits about Cameron Crowe and Elizabethtown, as well as how she sees her small roles in things like Jurassic World. Through it all, we’re laughing a lot, which I think you’ll get a kick out of. When it comes to this lead role, however, we’re far more serious, talking about the weight of the character. It’s a stunning performance, among the best of the year so far, so definitely seek it out!
