Before Emmy Gold: Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie

This year’s Emmy nominees for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie are all seasoned actors with years of experience behind them. However, two are first time nominees, two have only one previous nominations each, with no wins between them, and another has numerous nominations but only one win. Here’s a look at each of the nominees. 

Matt Bomer

Nominated For: Fellow Travelers

Hidden Gem: Tru Calling (2003-2004)

Matt Bomer got his start in the world of daytime soap operas, starring in All My Children and Guiding Light, going on to appear in the primetime series Tru Calling opposite 

Eliza Dushku. In 2005, Bomer made his film debut in the thriller Flightplan, then in 2007 gained recognition with his recurring role in the NBC television series Chuck. From 2009 to 2014, he starred as con artist Neal Caffrey in the USA Network series White Collar. Bomer had supporting roles in the 2011 thriller In Time, the 2012 comedy-drama Magic Mike and its 2015 sequel, and the 2016 neo-noir film The Nice Guys

In 2015, he won a Golden Globe Award and received a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for playing a closeted writer in the television film The Normal Heart. Bomer has earned a second Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie for his role as Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller in the Showtime series Fellow Travelers. The limited series centers on the decades-long romance between two men who first meet during the height of McCarthyism in the 1950s.

Richard Gadd

Nominated For: Baby Reindeer

Hidden Gem: Against the Law (2017)

Richard Gadd’s career began on the stages of Glasgow, Scotland as a stand up comedian, winning a multitude of awards for his various stand up shows. As an actor, Gadd had multiple credits in various television series, television films and short films. Gadd’s acting career began with a role in 1 episode of BBC Scotland’s Scot Squad, in 2014, and continued with an appearance in 4 episodes of E4’s Tripped in 2015. He starred opposite Daniel Mays in the 2017 BAFTA-nominated BBC Two single drama Against the Law. As a screenwriter, Gadd wrote for Netflix’s Sex Education, and has written episodes of the British series Ultimate Worrier and The Last Leg. 

In 2019, Gadd wrote and starred in a stage production of Baby Reindeer, which chronicled his experiences of being stalked by ‘Martha’, and sexually assaulted by a man he met earlier in his career. The production won numerous awards, and caught the attention of Netflix, who tapped Gadd to adapt it into a series for the streaming service. His efforts have resulted in three Emmy nominations, Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie, Outstanding Writing For A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie, and Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series. 

Jon Hamm

Nominated For: Fargo

Previous Nominations: 16 nominations (Mad Men, 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt);  1 Win- Mad Men (2015)

Hidden Gem: A Young Doctor’s Notebook (2012-2013)

Jon Hamm had difficulty landing roles early in career. After he failed to get any acting work for three years, William Morris dropped him as a client. He continued working as a waiter and, briefly, worked as a set designer for a softcore porn movie. In 2000, Hamm landed the role of romantic firefighter Burt Ridley on NBC’s drama series Providence. After a series of small roles in various films and television shows, Hamm landed the career-making (and Emmy-earning) role of Don Draper on AMC’s Mad Men. Hamm is also known for his leading film roles in Million Dollar Arm Keeping Up with the Joneses Beirut and Confess, Fletch, as well as his supporting roles in The Town, Sucker Punch, Bridesmaids, Baby Driver, Tag, Bad Times at the El Royale, Richard Jewell, and Top Gun: Maverick. 

This year, Hamm has earned a pair of Emmy nominations —one for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie for the fifth season of FX’s acclaimed series Fargo, in which he portrayed corrupt sheriff Roy Tillman, and Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series for his role as Paul Marks on Apple TV+’s The Morning Show. 

Tom Hollander

Nominated For: Feud: Capote vs. The Swans

Hidden Gem: Bedrooms and Hallways (1998)

Tom Hollander began acting at a young age, earning his first professional role at the age of 14 in the BBC film, John Diamond. He received numerous accolades for his stage work in his youth, and would go on to appear in the British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, and the BBC miniseries Wives and Daughters. Hollander gained attention portraying Mr. Collins in the 2005 Joe Wright film Pride & Prejudice, and as Lord Cutler Beckett in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Other film roles include Gosford Park, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Valkyrie, In the Loop, Hanna, About Time, The Invisible Woman, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and Bohemian Rhapsody, as well as the AMC series The Night Manager. 

Hollander was cast as acclaimed writer Truman Capote in the FX/Hulu series, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, in which Capote ruins his friendships with the Swans, a socialite group of New York City high society, by writing a thinly veiled fictionalized account of their scandalous and hedonistic lives in his (ultimately unfinished) novel, Answered Prayers. The role earned Hollander a 2024 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie. 

Andrew Scott

Nominated For: Ripley

Previous Nominations: 1 nomination (Black Mirror)

Hidden Gem: Dead Bodies (2003)

After appearing in a couple of television commercials, Andrew Scott was chosen for a starring role in his first film, Korea at the age of 17.He went on to study theater in college, and would eventually land stage roles in productions such as Brighton Beach Memoirs and Long Day’s Journey into Night. Scott came to prominence portraying James Moriarty in the BBC series Sherlock, for which he won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Supporting Actor. His role as the priest on the second series of Fleabag earned him the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He is also known for his roles in the films Pride, Spectre, and 1917.

Scott produced and starred in the Netflix series, Ripley, in which he portrayed Tom Ripley, a down-at-the-heels con-man, who is hired by a wealthy man to convince his prodigal son to return home from Italy. But Tom’s introduction to Dickie Greenleaf’s comfortable and leisurely life abroad turns out to be the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder. The series earned Scott two Emmy nominations this year, Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie and Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series. 

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards airs Sunday, September 15, 2024 at 8:00 PM EDT on ABC.
