Welcome back to my Home Movies! This week, we have have an interesting little documentary taking top honors as part of a thin slate. Yes, today my top pick is none other than Kim’s Video. What else is hitting shelves, including another new Criterion Collection release? Read on to find out…
Kim’s Video
This documentary has really intriguing subject matter, especially to New York cinephiles. Kim’s Video isn’t just a title, but also the name of a famous rental store in NYC. As it expanded, the store became known for housing obscure films of all sort. Once it closed, those titles vanished. The doc follows an investigation into where the lost video collection of 55,000 movies ended up, resulting in an excursion to Sicily. I won’t say any more, but documentary fans would do well to give this one a shot!

A Story of Floating Weeds / Floating Weeds: Two Films by Yasujiro Ozu
From The Criterion Collection: “In 1959, Yasujiro Ozu remade his 1934 silent classic A Story of Floating Weeds in color with celebrated cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa. Setting his later version in a seaside location, Ozu otherwise preserves the details of his elegantly simple plot wherein an aging actor returns to a small town with his troupe and reunites with his former lover and their son, a scenario that enrages his current mistress and results in heartbreak for all. Together, the films offer a unique glimpse into the evolution of one of cinema’s greatest directors. A Story of Floating Weeds finds Ozu in the midst of developing his mode of expression; Floating Weeds reveals his distinct style at its pinnacle. In each, the director captures the joy and sadness of everyday life.”
Stay tuned for more next week…
