There’s something darkly funny to me, in an “inside baseball” office politics way, that Oppenheimer was the vehicle to Christopher Nolan’s Oscar glory that we all witnessed last night. Not only was this movie the first feature-length film he’s directed with the financial and institutional backing of Universal Pictures, it’s his first movie since Memento not distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. He had been putting out films under their umbrella for over twenty years! They entrusted him to resurrect one of their most valuable intellectual properties! That studio has devoted serious amounts of money and time on awards campaigns for pretty much everything he’s directed since The Dark Knight, the smash hit cultural phenomenon whose infamous omission from the Best Picture lineup changed that category forever. They were two peas in a pod since before I even attended high school as a freshman.
But only now, after their relationship soured over Tenet’s distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic and he jumped ship to Universal, has he finally convinced Hollywood to bestow upon him, his longtime producing partner Charles Roven, and his producer/wife Emma Thomas, the title of “Academy Award Winner.” On the night of March 10th, 2024, they had to watch their man accept the industry’s highest honor wearing a different team’s colors:
Not that he owes Warner Bros. any loyalty. No one owes any for-profit corporation their unconditional loyalty. In this day and age, when it’s getting harder to find backing for any project with a price tag in-between a microbudget indie and a summer tentpole behemoth, any filmmaker can and should take whatever golden opportunity presents itself even if that means ruffling a few feathers among your old business pals over at the other end of the studio lot. But… it’s still pretty funny, right? Especially since he (along with Kevin Feige and Jon Favreau over at Marvel) midwifed into being what became a fifteen-year trend of superhero blockbusters dominating the box office and squeezing out mainstream adult dramas like Oppenheimer from financial viability. In hindsight, Universal was a little insane to agree to the deal Nolan demanded: $100 million production budget that they had to match dollar-for-dollar in their marketing budget, an exclusive theatrical window of at least three months plus another three weeks before and after its release when Universal couldn’t theatrically premiere any new films, oh and also he had to get paid 20% of its first-dollar gross. This three hour-long, dialogue-driven project about a World War II-era scientist would have had to take in at least half-a-billion just to turn a profit. This was shortly after Tenet had been declared an underperformer, by the way.
And still, it might have failed had his former partners at Warner Bros. not engaged in a release date pissing match with him via Barbie that accidentally turned into a meme-driven double-feature cultural juggernaut! And yes, Barbie also made a ton of money and even ended up breaking The Dark Knight’s box office record as the most lucrative movie ever from the studio. Rising tide, boats, etc. But man, there’s got to be at least some grumbling from the higher-ups that they weren’t riding Oppenheimer’s awards wave immediately after ending a partnership with him that was older than the lifetime of actress Jenna Ortega.
But… they made off well with Barbie. Thank goodness for their shareholders that they even had Barbie last year. Because, if you set aside Joey’s favorite film of 2023, their earnings have been… not so hot, lately.

Actually, that’s a bit of an understatement; set aside Greta Gerwig’s pop feminist meta-comedy, and that studio has been throwing gutterballs repeatedly over the last several fiscal quarters. All four installments of their now-dead-and-buried D.C. Extended Universe franchise from last year bombed, with The Flash going down as one of the most catastrophic box office failures in Hollywood history. The Color Purple also bombed, with only a single Best Supporting Actress nomination (which it lost) to show for its aggressive and expensive awards marketing campaign. Magic Mike’s Last Dance barely broke even. It sure seems like everyone who has a financial stake in that company owes her and producer/star Margot Robbie flowers, an expensive bottle of wine, and a handwritten “Thank You” note (and the same to the people behind The Nun II and The Meg 2, I guess) for keeping their company alive through 2023. Or, at least, they deserved something a little kinder than the huffy defensiveness of pundits and has-beens who insisted they positively definitely didn’t deserve Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Lead Actress, respectively.
Heck, if the Oscars really are just a glorified industry validation/marketing scheme that it’s sometimes dismissed as, I am hard-pressed to think of more than a tiny handful of Hollywood figures from last year who could be more deserving of a big “You Won Capitalism” trophy than them. If not from the Academy, then certainly from Warner Bros. Instead, they’ve decided the most deserving of reward is apparently their CEO, David Zaslav. Only he is not getting an Oscar, but rather, enough money for him and his children and his grandchildren to effortlessly live in fabulous luxury for the rest of their lives. He made off with $498,915,318 by the time the strikes that gripped the industry last summer kicked off, and he continues to rake in money that would be literally life-changing for the rest of us. If you were paid one dollar per second, starting right now, you’ll be speculating on the major contenders at the upcoming 112th Academy Awards in December 2039 before you made that amount of money.
And he’s netting that obscene paycheck to do one thing: ruthlessly pursue growth to make the line go up on those quarterly earnings reports to make the shareholders happy. That’s it. That’s the only thing he has to achieve in exchange for a compensation package exceeding the nominal GDP of Micronesia. I personally think the existence of that kind of job, one apparently so important that it’s entrusted to the top c-suite executive, is a reflection of a sick and broken economic system, but at the very least, you would think guys like Zaslav would be able to meet the one metric by which their performance would be considered successful, and he couldn’t even manage that.
From Cynthia Littleton at Variety:
Warner Bros. Discovery shares were down 9% in pre-market by the end of the company’s hourlong conference call with Wall Street analysts. Shares closed Thursday at $9.56 and were down to around $8.75 shortly after 9 a.m. ET. The stock was down 10% after just two minutes of formal trading as markets opened at 9:30 a.m. ET. By day’s end, the stock was down 10% to $8.61, near an all-time low since WB Discovery was birthed in April 2022 by the merger of AT&T’s WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc.
WB Discovery shares are down 26% for the year to date and down 45% for the past 12 months.
I would love to talk to a member of Warner Bros. Discovery’s board of directors about this. I really would. I would love for one of them to look me in the eye and try to tell me their CEO is a truly one-of-a-kind visionary who delivered results that couldn’t have been replicated or even improved on by any random undergrad fresh out of Boston University. Or the head of a mid-sized film distributor who would have commanded a fraction of what Zaslav is taking in. Do you think those less “seasoned” candidates would have burned the bridges that Zaslav has? Delisted all video games published through Adult Swim? Eliminated the existence of a $90 million-budgeted Batgirl movie entirely? Refused to screen or sell Coyote vs. Acme for a relatively minor tax write-off? Killed off one of the last profitable internet comedy websites after buying up and deleting their independent film project out of… presumably spite? Solidified a reputation among creative professionals as a cynical hack in a fancy suit who’ll ice their projects without so much as a warning or even an explanation? Oh, but don’t worry! He is responding to these embarrassing setbacks by… blaming other people and making vague promises about his “strong attack plan” for next year. Which is, from what I can tell, just trying to replicate the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their D.C. library again and hope for the best because now James Gunn is calling the creative shots instead of Zack Snyder. Wowee. David O. Selznick bows at the feet of such an innovative entrepreneurial mind.
You had one job, David. One. And amazingly, you still have it, despite continuing your abysmal performance that had already netted you the title of “Most Overpaid CEO” a full year ago:
If we’re going to continue centering our entire economic system on this late-stage hypercapitalist dystopia, if we’re going to pretend clawing at unsustainable revenue increases like we’re expecting to find an infinite money glitch in the real world, if we want to continue to delude ourselves into believing this kind of ravenous appetite for year-after-year profit margin increases at the expense of sustainability, occupational safety, a living wage for workers, or even customer satisfaction is, in any way, in our best interests as a society, it’s not too much to demand the business demagogues currently pulling the levers of this odious economic engine be competent at following through on their heartless, destructive corporate mandates. If we’re going to continue to tolerate grotesque income inequality and the ravages of austerity politics, can we at least have some semblance of a reliable return on investment to shareholders? Surely, everyone of every political persuasion can all agree that a CEO who presides over a net loss of more than four times his exorbitant salary during his tenure either shouldn’t be paid that much, or shouldn’t be in that position at all?
What is it going to take? How much more of this incompetence-bordering-on-malfeasance will be tolerated until someone asks these tough questions so we can stop treating these people as if they’re critical job-creating paragons of hard work and bootstraps? Most of them can’t even do the one job they actually have, let alone comprehend the true value of everyone else’s.

Thank you for highlighting this pattern and the negative ROI on CEO pay WBD experiences by keeping David Zaslav at the helm. He killed so many diverse shows like Our Flag Means Death and sat on opportunities to make money on its rabid fanbase, who is begging for merchandise, physical media, or even selling the show to another streamer when they cancelled season 3 (that was already in preproduction.) His decisions are irrational and cruel, and he needs to be fired. #FinishOurStories #SaveOFMD
Thank you for pointing out what an utter failure and pandemic-level threat to film, television and games David Zaslav is. His dystopian decisions to shelve, disappear, and destroy completed and nearly completed projects is next-level despicable. The fact that he is the most overpaid executive in the USA makes his grim reaper-like pall over film, television, and game artists even worse. He’s destroying the legacies of Warner Bros, HBO, so much animation and more – all so WBD’s stock can plummet. Someone on Twitter posted that the only way to explain Zaslav’s continued role as WBD president is that he must be regularly performing fellatio on the members of the board of directors. Honestly, it’s the only explanation that makes sense.
#FireDavidZaslav
Surely this dude needs to go. He’s cancelling hits like Our Flag Means Death for being too diverse, he’s trashing fully made movies like Coyote vs Acme for the tax breaks – how can this be what has happened to HBO? An embarrassment. The stock keeps tanking and I hope the shareholders will finally have had enough and kick him to the curb soon.
Capitalism kills art. Plain and simple. When your metrics for success hinge solely on “line goes up”, no one on the creative side wins. We’re seeing critically-acclaimed shows like Rap Sh!t and Our Flag Means Death being cancelled while mediocre spin-offs of old franchises keep getting renewed and more reality series get greenlit.
I hope that we can make an example of WBD and show the industry as a whole that art does not exist for profit, and we won’t support companies that refuse to make good-faith efforts to tell the stories that we desperately need AND want told.
Crazier thing is, line doesn’t go up for WBD lol
HBO/Max dropped the wonderful and unique show that was Our Flag Death in pre-pre- production it was set to film this month to September. Crew had booked flights and accommodation for the filming and it, the third and FINAL season the Creator wanted was cancelled.
It was a beautiful series about love of all kinds, no matter your age, colour, sexual orientation or pronoun and they just dropped.
So many other shows have been cancelled around the same time and from the DAY that the OFMD cancellation news came out stocks have dropped. How can this be good for the company let alone the fans!
Zaslav out! Surely the shareholders must have no confidence in this man by now! He’s cancelling and removing beloved shows, films and games in favour of bland reality TV. This can’t be the future of the entertainment industry. Bring back Our Flag Means Death!
Wow, Zaslav is truly as incompetent as he is ghoulish. His pattern of having content not only axed but completely destroyed is truly disgusting. How is someone like that in charge of a corporation that is supposed to produce ART??
Then again, I shouldn’t be surprised. His plans for MAX are apparently to turn it into a platform for sports and reality trash, as if there weren’t enough places to watch those already.
Anything worth watching, anything groundbreaking or diverse is fast disappearing from that site. Rap Sh!t and Our Flag Means Death to name but two. They have big fanbases who would love to pay for both streaming and merch but are now leaving MAX in droves.
Zaslav is a money- and power-hungry prick that needs to go!!
Thank you for writing about this! He’s truly the worst villain of Hollywood right now, cancelling queer diverse stories like Our Flag Means Death and Rap Sh!t while promoting terrible reboots and reality shows with bad audience scores that no one asked for. I truly wonder if he’s trying to crash WBD into the ground… #SaveOFMD #FinishOurStories
If his job is ruining the company, cause mass unsubscribing and insider trade, then yes, he’s good on his job. And either it’s due to unabashed greed or just fu moment, even when the creator and fans asked to let the show being picked up by another company, allegedly he increased the price so nobody would buy.
Sell the show. Let us go.
Preach! This nails the concerns many of us have about the demise of the Late Great Warner Bros and (HBO)Max.
So many bad decisions. So much cynical decimation of creativity….
And it speaks to the concern we should all have about the corrupt culture of late stage capitalism.
Thank you for not being shy about the absurdity of all of this. It’s offensive how much Zaslav makes while he cancels shows/movies/video games leaving thousands unemployed. Shows & films with BIPOC & LGBTQ+ stories like Our Flag Means Death, Batgirl, and Rap Shit. He also refuses to sell back the rights/IPs of projects back to the original creators. Without it they can’t shop around to other streamers and licensors and the project has to stay with Warner Bros. All so he can, what? Delete it off the face of the earth for a tax break? This man is running WBD into the ground, he needs to be removed immediately. #FireDavidZaslav #DontStreamOnMax
How this guy is still heading WBD is an utter mystery. The untimely cancellation of shows that were already in the can or about to begin production shows an utter disregard for art, artists and the audiences who value quality programming.
Thank you for this comprehensive article on David Zaslav’s failings!
The recent cancelations of diverse and inclusive shows on Max also paint his decisions in a very unfavourable light. Especially considering the apparently unlimited budget that WB holds in store for their planned retelling of the Harry Potter story. A project in which a known transphobe is involved in a critical role…
THANK YOU. The incompetence and continued support of Zaslav from WBD baffles me. He is running the company into the ground as if THAT’s his job. Insane. From movies to TV to games, he continues to make the worst possible decisions. I no longer have Max and am awaiting the further downfall of this company under his watch. T
David needs to GO!
This man’s actions have reached cartoon-like levels of villainy and incompetence. How long until the shareholders do something and #FireDavidZazlav? He has turned legacy brands like WB and HBO into trashy outlets catering to the lowest common denominator and cutting off original, heartfelt projects at the knees with no regard for the people who work in those projects and the fans who support them. There is no respect for stories or art (or even popularity among viewers), only personal gain. I hope the shareholders wise up before he runs the company to the ground. The fans have already woken up. #LongLiveOFMD
David Zaslav and other execs like him represent the worst of what is happening in not only the entertainment industry, but all industries: acquire a beloved brand, replace everything that made it unique and successful with schlock, then pocket as much money as possible as it careens into the ground.
What he did with “Coyote vs. Acme” should be criminal. He made bad faith negotiations, inflating the asking price far beyond reasonable value, with no real intention of ever selling. It was his plan all along to write it off as a loss, exactly as he did with “Batgirl” and countless other projects.
What he is doing to people’s livelihoods and life’s work is the corporate version of setting a restaurant on fire for insurance money. It’s fraud on a much larger scale, and as usual, it’s the little guys — taxpayers, in this case, who foot the bill.
Equally repulsive as Laslav’s shady business dealings are his overt attempts to eradicate projects featuring diverse casts who represent marginalized groups. Rather than renew the in-demand, highly-rated show “Our Flag Means Death,” he promotes and funnels cash to JK Rowling; the very same JK Rowling, who, on Sunday (Mother’s Day in the UK), felt it an appropriate occasion to not only suggest that transgender women are not real mothers, but mocked and demeaned them in doing so. Has Zaslav, WBD or Max taken a stance against her hateful speech as one might expect? No, not a single word.
Art for art’s sake has become “entertainment” for investors’ sakes. Zaslav and his ilk are burning literal creative empires to the ground to enrich themselves and leave the rest of the world and human culture poorer for it.
Absolute poetry. You’ve captured the utter disrepect Zaslav’s shown towards entertainment as a whole beautifully. The sooner WB’s rid of him, the better.
#FireDavidZaslav
If there was a manual about how to destroy your company David would still over achieve in this. He has managed to cancel shows that mean something to thousands of viewers. It is a really bad look to consistently cancel shows that represent BIOPIC and LGBTQ + communities. Those from the plus sizes and neurodivergent communities. Shows that make people feel seen. Especially when the numbers were there. I know I am only one of many who have cancelled my subscription and unless serious changes are made and canceled shows are renewed then I will just have to subscribe and watch others.
Thank you for writing about this! Zaslav really is destroying this company by making the worst decisions cutting shows people actually want to see (diverse creative scripted shows and movies like Our Flag Means Death, Rap Sh!t, Coyote vs Acme, etc) for his own personal gain. He needs to go!
#FireDavidZaslav
Thank you for highlighting all the damage Zaslav has done with his selfish, greedy, incompetent decisions. I honestly can’t believe he hasn’t been thrown out already. It’s so sad that the decisions of one man can effectively ruin so much beautiful, creative, and diverse artistic expression.
To add to David Zaslav’s list of concerning choices, he chose not to renew the phenomenal original HBO Max show, Our Flag Means Death, after season 2. It was high-rating, has a huge fanbase and was incredibly culturally impactful given its diverse, inclusive content. This show getting cancelled is heartbreaking and makes no sense, especially when the show was in pre-production for its intended season 3 to finish the story. How could he let go one of the best shows on television? The fans, who have petitioned hard to save the show, want answers and we have not been given any real ones. Please help us get justice for Our Flag Means Death and get a new CEO who values quality, life-changing shows. #SaveOFMD
Thank you for highlighting what a pic this man is on the industry. He cancelled Our Flag Means Death for being too diverse, too queer, too popular(?), and is actively destroying art in the name of tax breaks. Not to mention selling stocks just before announcing cancellations. He needs to be fired. #SaveOFMD
Zaslav has truly become an embarrassment and an effigy waiting to burn at the hands of everyone who is or would be his customers. As the axing of beloved, successful properties continue to increase while MAX’s stock continues to plumet, one has to ask how on earth this man still has a job? His incompetence seems to know no bounds: refusing to release or even sell an anticipated, fully finished movie with Coyote Vs. Acme. Unceremoniously cancelling two of their most popular, highest performing, and most diverse original titles in Our Flag Means Death and Rap Sh!t, likely refusing to sell those off as well. Targeting indie creatives making fan works of said cancelled shows. Delisting all Adult Swim titles.
What’s next? To add insult to injury, he’s sent his lapdog Bloys out to “call upon Gay Twitter” to support their shows with milquetoast, blink and you’ll miss it queer representation. He has done a fantastic job of angering and alienating all of his queer fans. To the point that MAX barely even acknowledged their GLAAD nominees this year, out of fear of criticism from the justifiably angry fans of said cancelled GLAAD nominated shows.
To top it all off, he has had accusations of insider trading after selling off a boatload of stock right before the Our Flag Means Death cancellation. Zaslav has a truly unique way of bringing all corners of fans and stockholders to hate him. When is MAX going to get sick of his nonsense, and his bringing only embarrassment and failure to their decades-old former powerhouse? If they aren’t careful, they will wind up in the streamer graveyard, while he swans off on his yacht into the sunset. It’s in the board’s best interest to pay attention. Enough is enough.
#SaveOFMD #FinishOurStories #FireZaslav #DontStreamOnMAX
This man makes so many incomprehensible business decisions I legitimately don’t understand why WBD shareholders haven’t sued him for breach of fiduciary duty. It certainly looks to the world like he’s trying to either enrich himself or further some kind of agenda at the expense of WBD stock prices. It makes me so angry and disgusted that I don’t think I can even watch DC shows or movies anymore, because the “WB” logo just makes me sick to my stomach.
#FinishOurStories #SaveOFMD Fire this man.
