The Sunday Scaries are upon us once again! Yes, as the weekend concludes, most of us feel an oncoming sense of anticipatory dread about the week ahead. Anxiety about work manifests itself into a feeling that’s known as the Sunday Scaries. However, we at Awards Radar are here to combat that, by taking back the name. Now, we want you think about a horror-centric piece on the site when you hear the term. So, let us continue on with another installment of the Awards Radar Sunday Scaries! Today, we’re looking at some of the recent news surrounding A-list filmmakers and horror…
In the past month or two, some very big names have been talking about their interest in the horror genre. Back in late January, it came out that apparently the project reuniting Joel Coen and Ethan Coen would be a horror film. Last month, while on the campaign trail for Oppenheimer, no less than Christopher Nolan spoke of how he would love to make a fright flick at some point. There are obvious reasons why a scary movie would appeal to these folks. My point today? More of these A-listers should be interested.
Nolan probably never actually makes this horror film, but it’s an incredibly exciting proposition to consider. At this point, the man can literally make whatever he wants. While he’ll likely never make a James Bond film, he could snap his fingers and helm the next 007 adventure. So, if he actually ever decides to tackle the genre, mountains will move. A likely future film? No. One that we can dream about? Absolutely.
The Coen Brothers, however, could have this genre outing as their next project. Rumors have it as a pure horror effort, with a ton of bloody. The Coens are hardly strangers to blood and gore, so they’re a very strong fit for this. Now, it’ll obviously be through their very specific lens, but assuming it comes to pass, this could be one of the highest profile horror films in recent memory. If nothing else, expect a future Sunday Scaries on it, should it actually happen.

Horror has its own masters of the genre, but they aren’t always A-listers on the whole. Jordan Peele qualifies, and James Wan does too, though he’s moved away from the genre a bit. Most directors who make their bones in horror tend to go elsewhere and either never return, or only rarely dabble again in it. Think Sam Rami, for example. Big names rarely enter into scary movies after already establishing themselves.
We obviously know that fright flicks are a great spot for a young filmmaker to make their early statements, as the low budgets and visceral nature make for natural calling card efforts. With an established veteran, however, they could enter in knowing all the tricks of the trade. Assuming it’s a project they’re passionate about, the possibilities are endless!
We’ll see what happens with the Coen project and Nolan musing, but I do hope that they help bring some big names into the fold. If you have any suggestions for whom, feel free to mention them in the comments. In the meantime, we can all dream about A-list directors putting their mark on the future of horror…
Stay tuned for another Sunday Scaries installment next weekend!
